Music, it’s personal

December 27, 2009 by admin

Music is so subjective.

Everyone has his or her own favorites, styles, genres, and opinions.  When you actually create and release original music it can be a very personal experience. Not everyone will buy into your style, message, or sound.
It is one thing to release music and another to make musical connections.
It all depends on what a listener is looking for.
What are you looking for?
I can’t give you teenage angst, anti-establishment rhetoric, dance mixes, or tape loops.
What I can do is give you real emotion in my own diverse mix of pop/rock music in an intentionally under-produced presentation.  I play all the instruments (except sax) and provide all the vocals to all my original songs.  My first release is entitled “daily divergence” the second, and most recent is “close to home.”
Those who know my story, but not my music, may have a preconceived notion that the music is all about a difficult circumstance.  It’s not. There are songs of love (close to home, magic wand), hope (walking back to the sun), heroes (Jon Wayne), relationships (day off, nobody, things we needed), despair (through the walls), the celebration of music (difficult times), storytelling (old wine), anticipation (I just want to meet you), uplifting feelings (emotional drought), and introspection (nothing at all).

All of the music was recorded as a live performance piece free of any technological overhauls.
You hear the sound that was recorded as it went into the microphones.
Writing and recording these songs has been rewarding and gratifying experience.
I believe in what I’ve created and appreciate all that have purchased my music.
The connections with those who my music has touched have been remarkable.

I am currently working on my third release.
My website (www.DomMusicOnline.com) contains reviews and sound samples so you can be the judge.
I hope it is what you are looking for.

Great article Dom. You are so right, music is completely subjective and the beauty of it or the disgust of it is in the eye of the beholder. I have always viewed music and it’s production as equally creative and subjective. Over the years I have been able to pick out producers by their personality styles like recently listening to the new Nickleback CD “Dark Horse” I heard signs of Mutt Lange and sure enough he co-produced and co-wrote on the CD. The good thing was Nickleback retained their signature wall of big souind anbd awesome drum mix hile Mutt was able to interject his awesome production style so production speaks as loudly as the actual writing to me. It’s all how you use the tools. Excellent. Keep those articles coming!
